LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOR OLDER ADULTS
The Legal Assistance Network for Older Adults is a group of attorneys
and legal assistants (paralegals) who deliver a wide range of services
throughout the state to older adults.
This includes help with the following:
- Life Services Planning
- Preparation of simple wills
- Social Security - SSI,
- Representative Payee Program
- Health Care issues - Medicare and Medicaid, living wills, insurance
- Long Term Care - nursing home concerns and patients' rights
- Protective Services - abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of older adults, guardianship of the person
- Housing Landlord/Tenant issues
- Consumer Protection
What Kind of Assistance is Offered?
- Legal advice and representation by qualified attorneys
- Counseling and other assistance to individuals
- Information and referral
- Community education regarding legal and related issues such as benefits and entitlements, wills and trusts, guardianship and powers of attorney, etc.
Who Provides the Services?
Congress requires that legal assistance be provided under the Older Americans Act.
- The Executive Office on Aging provides state coordination of legal services to older adults. EOA can also answer general questions about how to find the kind of help you need.
- Designated legal service providers in each county offer free legal services to persons age 60 and older for certain civil cases. There are no fees for these services, but contributions are welcome.
Other Legal Resources
- Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii serves low income persons by attempting to match them with volunteer attorneys.
- Lawyer Referral Service of the Hawaii State Bar Association offers referrals to attorneys who specialize in certain areas of the law.

- Increase accessibility of legal assistance for older adults
- Assure adequate services to the most vulnerable older adults
- Fill gaps in the existing service system and strengthen current legal assistance for older adults
- Improve the quality of legal assistance for older adults
